Maths:  See below!

Maths homework for this week is to play TTRS at home 3 or 4 times during the week for 10 minutes or so each time.

‘Times Tables Rockstars’ is now set up for our class. The children will bring home a reminder of their login details.

Instead of the teacher setting the tables for every learner, TTRS now has Automatic Training Mode to guide learners through the tables in a manageable and sensible way.

Here is a description from TTRS of the path through the tables from now:

Learners play in the Garage or the Arena and begin with our first set of questions (1×10 up to 4×10). When they can answer at a rate of 20 per minute, we’ll introduce the next set of questions. As learners progress, Automatic Training Mode brings in commutativity, missing number questions and division facts. So the first 9 levels, look like this:

Level 1 : 1×10 to 4×10
Level 2 : 10×1 to 10×4
Level 3 : A mix of 1 and 2

Level 4 : 10×?=10 to 10×?=40
Level 5 : ?×10=10 to ?×10=40
Level 6 : A mix of 4 and 5

Level 7 : 10÷10 to 40÷10
Level 8 : 10÷1 to 40÷4
Level 9 : A mix of 7 and 8

Then the process repeats for 5×10 to 8×10 and once more for 9×10 to 12×10 before moving onto the next table and starting the process again.

Once they have a few tables under their belt, ATM combines them for a while, to consolidate recall, and then brings in a fresh table. The process repeats – all the while giving plenty of opportunity to revisit prior learning, by interleaving earlier tables and giving due weight to the facts we know learners struggle with the most – until your learner has become a Rock Star at all the tables!

Reading: Please take time to read every night. Parents – Please see the list of questions which can be used with school reading materials. These went out attached to a letter about Reading on Wednesday.

Thank – you.

Y4 Homework Task 26 3 19 to be returned on  Mon 15 4 19 so that we can prepare for our Geography Topic Celebration Afternoon on 24 4 19

Latitude Longitude City
53.4 N 1.5 W Sheffield
51.5 N 0.9 W London
48.8 N 2.3 E Paris
52.5 N 13.4 E Berlin
48.2 N 16.4 E Vienna
37.9 N 23.7 E Athens
41.4 N 2.1 E Barcelona
53.3 N 6.2 W Dublin
38.7 N 9.1 W Lisbon
52.3 N 4.9 W Amsterdam

What kind of game could you make up using these city co – ordinates, or others, or a mixture of these and your own, to help others learn about and have fun with latitude and longitude? Think of some ideas.

Here are the latitude and Longitude co – ordinates for some European cities. These can all be found at:

https://simplemaps.com/resources/free-country-cities

along with the co – ordinates of lots more world cities.  Remember, we always give Latitude first (North or South of the Equator) and Longitude second (East or West of Greenwich Meridian.)

With permission, look up our ‘Latitude and Longitude’ song on You Tube:

https://www.google.com/search?q=latitude+and+longitude+song&oq=latitude+and+longitude+song&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.6373j1j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Remember our definitions from the song:

“Latitude is the angular distance measured in degrees,

It tells how far from the equator any place happens to be.

Longitude is the angular distance measured in degrees,

It tells how far from Greenwich England any place happens to be.”

Don’t bring the whole game on Monday 15th April! – just a few ideas, sketches, notes, images and resources and materials if you like.  Some of you may want to make a game in a team so you might use different peoples’ ideas in the same game. We will make the games in class.

This can be a tricky concept but maybe with a bit of thinking and practice you can learn more about it, and help others to learn about it too.

Y4 W.E. 19 10 18

Thank you for all the homework beautifully done and handed in.

This week we have:

Maths – Keep up the good work on Times Table Rock Stars.

Thank you for all the homework which was done and returned! To help with organisation, please could all homework be returned on Thursday. All homework books need to be put into the boxes under the board otherwise they will not get marked. Please can the children remember to do this themselves, and also do it when they are reminded first thing in the morning as quite a few sets of books were still left in bags until the end of Friday making it difficult to sort out the marking.

This week’s Maths:

Every child has been given a log on information letter for Times Tables Rockstars so please log in and play! We went through a demonstration game this afternoon for those who haven’t played for a while. Please note, this is exactly the same log on as MyMaths. No homework has been set on MyMaths this week.

Please complete the activity on p.9 of the Maths Mastery homework book. You could play the game more than once by covering up the ‘4 in a row’ with coins or counters rather than colouring in. I’ve included a sheet of simpler number bonds for some children to use.

Spellings: expanded, fascinate, muscle, scene, ascend, explosion, televise, literate, logical, legible.

Maths: The children have been given new maths homework books. These activities work alongside the work we are learning in class. Please complete the first two pages of Unit 1. The homework guides include information for parents to read through and the homework should be a fun way to consolidate what we have been learning in class.

Literacy: This week, we have been learning about direct speech and writing an alternative opening to Harry Potter. The children have been given an activity sheet to complete on direct speech.

Have a great weekend,

Best wishes,

Miss Kidd

Friday 8th September

The homework for this week is as follows:

Spellings: confession, possession, transmit, express, discussed, progressed, comprehend, confusion, remember, tension.

Literacy: I have given the children a comprehension on the Vikings. Please complete the task on the sheet using full sentences.

Maths: This week, there is no maths homework as the mymaths website is currently being updated with the children’s login’s in their new classes. There will be a new maths homework book for Y4. This runs alongside the maths lessons. I will set activities from this book every other week. Please only complete the activity set as this will be similar to the work completed in class. The book should last for the entire Autumn term. If the homework book is misplaced, there will be a charge for this as the school have ordered the correct amount for the year group and I have not been given any spare copies. So we would have to re-order the book again. I have explained this to the children today.

Have a great weekend,

Best Wishes,

Miss Kidd
